Javier Morala and Valvanera Rodríguez opened the Posada Molino del Canto in 1998. Both are passionate about nature and fascinated by birds, so it was natural that from the beginning they made birdwatching a central theme for visitors to the Posada. They soon developed guided birdwatching tours, for groups from Spain and abroad, primarily to the Parque Natural de las Hoces del Alto Ebro y Rudrón nature reserve.
In their free time, Javier and Valvanera have visited many parts of the world to see birds in their natural habitat: southern, central and north America, many European countries and all over Spain. This personal passion and their experience has led them to take part in international projects such as eBird, Worldbirds and Worldwaders.
Javier Morala is a qualified profesional ornithological guide. He is a member of the Spanish ornithological society SEO/BirdLife and has taken part in a number of conservation projects, including SACRE, NOCTUA, and ATLAS. He is responsible of the Las Hoces del Alto Ebro y Rudrón IBA (Important Bird Area) around the natural park of the same name. He contributed to the Burgos province Atlas of nesting birds and the Burgos ornithological directory.
Valvanera Rodriguez, the originator of the Posada Molino del Canto project, has always been interested in nature and its relationship with humans. She has participated actively in the design and construction of the Posada, providing natural building blocks, stone, wood, and natural cork insulation. For the interiors she sought all possible alternatives to synthetic products. Her desire to make the Posada Molino del Canto a special place has also led her to use organic foods and ecological cleaning products as far as possible. She has taken various courses in homemade food preparation, specialising in bread, pastries and cakes. She has participated in the design of hiking and bird-watching trails.
